{"id":3277,"date":"2023-02-07T15:49:40","date_gmt":"2023-02-07T15:49:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/server5.keti-test.it\/Verdeprofilo\/the-nine-principles-of-biophilic-design\/"},"modified":"2026-02-26T10:59:41","modified_gmt":"2026-02-26T10:59:41","slug":"the-nine-principles-of-biophilic-design","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.verdeprofilo.com\/en\/the-nine-principles-of-biophilic-design\/","title":{"rendered":"The Nine Principles of Biophilic Design"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In other articles published on our blog, we have already talked extensively about our\u00a0<strong>biophilia\u00a0<\/strong>(which is our innate love for nature and everything that is alive) and the discipline of\u00a0<strong>Biophilic Design\u00a0<\/strong>(which translates our biophilia into the built environment),\u00a0<strong>two topics that Verde Profilo holds very close to its heart<\/strong>, not only because we live and work in close contact with the\u00a0<strong>plant world on a\u00a0<\/strong>daily basis,\u00a0<strong>which is one of the important aspects of biophilic design<\/strong>, but also because we are aware that it is\u00a0<strong>a scientifically based discipline aimed at making people feel better in the built environment.\u00a0<\/strong>Moreover, this knowledge gives us the opportunity to explore a whole series of aspects that affect us very closely as a human species and as individuals: where we come from, who we are today, what our characteristics and needs are, what relationship we have with the natural world we come from, and many more.<\/p>\n<p>In this article:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #404740;\"><a style=\"color: #404740;\" href=\"#heading1\">How we can bring the principles of Nature into the built environment<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #404740;\"><a style=\"color: #404740;\" href=\"#heading2\">The nine principles of Biophilic Design<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>HOW WE CAN BRING THE PRINCIPLES OF NATURE INTO THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT<\/h2>\n<p>Along with developing the\u00a0<strong>BEST SOLUTIONS FOR INDOOR AND OUTDOOR GREEN SPACES for\u00a0<\/strong>our customers, we also need to think daily about<\/p>\n<ul class=\"unIndentedList\">\n<li><strong>what are the characteristics of the architectural spaces\u00a0<\/strong>where we are going to intervene with our green solutions<\/li>\n<li><strong>who are the people who will use these spaces\u00a0<\/strong>and what are\u00a0<strong>their needs<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>what effect our interventions have on individuals<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The discipline of\u00a0<strong>Biophilic Design deals with all these aspects\u00a0<\/strong>and tries to direct us towards\u00a0<strong>solutions in line with the biophilic tendency that all people have<\/strong>, although at different levels of intensity.<\/p>\n<p>To learn more about biophilic design, we approached the studies of\u00a0<strong>Stephen R. Kellert\u00a0<\/strong>who was a professor of social ecology at Yale University. He was the first to create a\u00a0<strong>consistent theoretical framework for the discipline<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In order to achieve satisfactory results of biophilic solutions that have positive effects on people, according to Kellert, there are\u00a0<strong>nine universal principles or conditions that are necessary to be able to apply Biophilic Design effectively\u00a0<\/strong>(Kellert, 2018).<\/p>\n<p>The nine principles may overlap and their order of presentation does not suggest any priority of importance. However, each principle provides a basis for the practice and use of the attributes developed by Kellert.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"heading2\">THE NINE PRINCIPLES OF BIOPHILIC DESIGN<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Biophilic Design<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>focuses on human adaptations to the natural world that in the course of evolution have improved people&#8217;s health, fitness and well-being<\/li>\n<li>creates interconnected and integrated environments and architectural solutions in which an ecological whole is experienced rather than individual parts<\/li>\n<li>encourages involvement and immersion in natural features and processes<\/li>\n<li>is effective when a wide range of people&#8217;s innate values about the natural world are fulfilled<\/li>\n<li>gives rise to emotional attachments to particular environments, structures, landscapes and places<\/li>\n<li>fosters feelings of belonging to a community that includes both people and the natural environment<\/li>\n<li>occurs in a variety of settings, including indoor, outdoor and transitional spaces and landscapes<\/li>\n<li>implies repeated and prolonged engagement and &#8216;authentic&#8217; experience with Nature, rather than artificial or forced<\/li>\n<li>seeks to improve the human relationship with natural systems and avoid negative environmental impacts<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>What are we waiting for to make our everyday living environments better places for our well- being and psychophysical health!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Happy ATTENTION REGENERATION and STRESS REDUCTION to all!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8211; &#8211; &#8211;<\/p>\n<p>Bettina Bolten, Biophilic design consultant<\/p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Read the ninth article in our Biophilia column.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":3276,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[32],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-3277","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-blog"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.9 -
